We live in Okpo...and we are very proud that E has learned that. The square mileage of the city is small making it easy to walk, bike or hike from our home. We love that. This is usually how we get around town.
The most intriguing thing about living abroad is food, right? How do we get it, what do they have, etc. Here in Okpo there are 2 foreign stores that sell most of the 'familiar' items we would be looking for. Although pricey it is worth it to have the things you like (especially if kimchi makes you want to barf). Costco is in Busan and takes about 1.5 hours to get there plus $22 in tolls so when you go it is a $600 trip. There are also a few Grocery stores (like GS Mart) that have a fairly good selection. Home Plus (our Wal-mart) is another great option (no pictures yet).
The best place is the outdoor market. It may be stinky, have flies landing on the fish, have things at foot level to be collecting dirt, have fish drying on clotheslines (can you spot that in the photo below?), etc...but something about it is very charming. The 100+ year old ladies sitting on buckets peeling garlic and onions, the colors of the fresh fruits and veggies laid out, the variety of good, etc. I haven't taken too many pictures yet because I'm a little embarrassed and don't want to offend anyone. I guess you'll just have to come visit and see for yourself!
Looks a lot like where we lived... loved Homeplus. I don't know what it is, but it seems that when Asian women hit 60 or so, they automatically look 100+. Have you seen lots of older women nearly bent in half due to osteoporosis? So sad.
